February 19, 2013 - Sweet, Healthy Go-To Treat

A few years ago a good friend of mine introduced me to this pairing and it has been a favourite of mine ever since. It's just two ingredients but they are so unbelievable together. You won't believe the complexity. It's nothing more than fresh strawberries and fresh figs. There is just a very specific, yet very simple, way to eat them. Figs and strawberries are roughly the same shape when one of them is upside down. It's just a matter of removing the tops (whether it be the green leaves on the berries of the stems of the figs) and slicing them in halves. Then match up the two halves together. Because of the natural sugar already present they do sort of stick to each other quite naturally. Then you pop both halves in your mouth at the same time. This is great as a snack or even a healthy dessert.

It's hard to explain, but the flavours and textures of the strawberries and the figs compliment each other so well. The strawberries are crisp and brightly sweet where the figs are soft and their sweetness is more mellow and earthy. You should really try this. They are even better when both fruit are in peak season, but I just had to make do. You could use green figs if you like but I prefer the black mission figs for this application. Particularly in Canada, fresh figs are not always the easiest to find. Dried figs simply do not work in their place. So when you do see them fresh at the market or in your local grocery outlet, take advantage.

The only way to screw this up is if your fruit is not ripe. So what do you have to lose? The only thing that takes less time than putting these together is gobbling them up!

Hope you try this out. If and when you do, let me know what you think.
